Noah's Bar Mitzvah

I had the pleasure of photographing Noah’s Bar Mitzvah this past weekend.  So, this means he is 13 and recognized as an adult by the Jewish faith.  I think it would be more accurate for me to say that he “became a bar mitzvah”, but it has become common to refer to the event itself as a Bar Mitzvah. This was my first time photographing one of these events, though I did attend a few of my friend’s Bat Mitzvah’s when I was in middle school.  “Bat” Mitzvah’s are for girls who have reached age 12.  I am not Jewish myself, but half my family is so it all feels vaguely familiar.

Noah’s mom gathered up some of his family for portraits a few days before the event so that we wouldn’t have to take the time to do them the day of.  Fabulous idea, I must say.  Here is Noah with his brother and Dad….I love these three pics as a series.

I did take the traditional straight-on portraits, but I think these creative angles are more blog-worthy.  Here is Noah, his grandfather, brother, and cousins. Sorry to blur most of you out, but it’s Noah’s day, right?

Noah and his grandfather.

This is before the ceremony when Noah was putting on his hand and head tefillin.  I had never seen this before, so was interested in looking it up when I got home.

You can always count on me to find the cute, bored kid during any sort of service:

Check out this guy’s awesome tie at the brunch afterwards.  That is a photo of his grandchild printed on the inside.  Neat gift idea, huh?

Overall, a nice day!  Maybe there will be more mitzvah’s in my future!

Julie - Hey Jill,
Just wanted to comment publicly that the pictures are great and I can’t wait to see them all. It was a pleasure working with you this past weekend and thank you for making our celebration easier to enjoy. I look forward to working with you again….you never know what will be in store next!
