Catching up….a Philadelphia wedding: Rachel & Joel

Sorry for not blogging much lately! Now that Spring is here, I can start to come out of hibernation. I’m getting married next weekend (woop!) so have been a bit distracted. Although I don’t plan on shooting weddings myself anymore, I may still second shoot for my photographer friends. I’m sharing some images below from a wedding I shot with Michael Temchine this past summer at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia. I’ve shot several conservative Jewish weddings, but never a true Orthodox wedding, though I believe this one would still be considered “modern”. I’m fascinated by different religions and cultures, but underneath it all, the meaning of these weddings is the same. They are all about two people committing their lives to each other, while surrounded by their loved ones. Joy and excitement permeated the air throughout Rachel and Joel’s amazing wedding day. Here is a detail shot of Rachel as she was having her makeup done. She was very calm with just a hint of nervous anticipation.Rachel’s mom was a ball of emotion when she saw her daughter in her wedding gown.I photographed many hugs and smiles during the Kabbalat Panim, where Rachel was surrounded by all the women closest to her and Joel was in a separate room with the men.
Next came the Bedecken, where the groom is escorted to his bride with much fanfare and he lowers her veil.The Chuppah ceremony was held in the courtyard of the hotel. It was a beautiful day. Here is Rachel being escorted in by her parents.Joel beaming at his bride…Reception time!

Meet the M family! | Baltimore Family Portraits

Can you believe the weather lately? It was just a bit chilly for my portrait session with the M family, but not too bad at all. It was close to sunset, so the light was beautiful outside.

This is Henry and Hayley with their pup. So sweet.

Their nanny has been with them since Hayley was just a toddler….lots of love there. Mom didn’t want to be in the photos, but maybe I can catch her next time!Father and son….Check out those beautiful eyes!

Welcome Baby Shane | Maryland Newborn Photographer

I’m excited to introduce baby Shane, who is the firstborn for my friends, Karin and Colin. This was my first session where I integrated video and I am loving the results. This cute family actually made it pretty easy!

Shane was a preemie baby, so he’s still super tiny at 5 weeks old. This outfit was supposed to be his “going home outfit”, but it’s still a little big on him. I just wanted to put him in my pocket and take him home! So, so adorable.Hey Daddy!Love his swirly baby hair…Doesn’t Karin look so peaceful and beautiful here?Zonked!Love this moment of laughter….Like father, like son.Tiny toes!Congrats Karin and Colin!

Mae, Fred and baby Noah! | Alexandria Portraits

You may remember Mae and Fred’s fabulous DC wedding in 2008. I was so excited to meet up with them and their one year-old recently for some family portraits. Noah is so stinkin’ cute that I wanted to take him home with me.

I loved these red Christmas lights! It was a challenge to shoot there though as there were tons of people walking by doing their holiday shopping. Aren’t they an adorable family?

Noah and his daddy. Whenever Noah would smile big, he would also lean forward like this….so squirmy and sweet!Noah and his mommy! He is not quite ready to walk on his own yet, which I guess is a good thing because he refuses to wear shoes.Santa just happened to be walking by and stopped to say hello!

Welcome Baby EJ! | Newborn Portraits

Meet sweet Baby EJ! I’ll be sharing more photos of him as he grows, so be sure to check back. He came into the world a few weeks earlier than expected and I can tell that he will continue to keep his parents on their toes from now on. EJ was three weeks old when I took these photos and he was really alert. Kari and Kris could snuggle or feed him to get him to doze, but not for long!EJ loves bath-time…he was just relaxin’ in the warm water.So cold! Life is tough, huh?One of my favorite moments happened right at the very end….I love how Kari is watching her boys from the background.

I was lucky to have another beautiful day at Patapsco State Park with another adorable family. You may remember them from my post a year ago just after little Bennett was born. He is on-the-go now chasing after his big brother, Carson, now almost 4. Check out how cute they are…Bennett’s face here makes me melt!The boys love riding in their wagon together!The happy couple was celebrating their 7th wedding anniversary the day we did these portraits…they first met in high school!

Cara, Brendan and the boys | Patapsco State Park Portraits

Cara and I go way back to middle school, but we really got to know each other as roommates at Salisbury State (now Salisbury University…fancy name) for a semester of our freshman year. We were dorm neighbors by coincidence, and neither of us were terribly pleased with our assigned roommates. Sooo, we did a switcheroo the next semester and lived happily (despite her being neat and me being messy) until Cara transferred to James Madison the next year. I stuck around another year and a half and then transferred to the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia.

Anyway, I was thrilled when Cara asked me to take some photos of her adorable family. We had the most perfect Fall day at Patapsco. Here are some of my faves!

Andrew is starting to look grown up already!Ryan recently turned 1 and is just the happiest little guy…How old are you?!

Bonnie & Kevin’s Wedding by the Bay

I had the honor of photographing Bonnie and Kevin’s intimate wedding at the Kitty Knight House in Kent County. It was a beautiful day with just a bit of an Autumn chill in the air. They were joined by just their family and closest friends for a quiet ceremony by the water and an elegant afternoon lunch.
Bonnie was calm and collected as she got ready.Seeing each other for the first time before the ceremony….so sweet!Kevin proposed to Bonnie on the porch of the Kitty Knight House, so they have some great memories there.Kevin’s twin sons were his “best men”. Bonnie’s brothers were her “men of honor” and escorted her down the aisle.Happy!Can you guess what one of their favorite pastimes is?An Autumn ring shot!There were several heartfelt and funny speeches…I always find the cute kids! That’s one of Bonnie’s nephews on the right reenacting his performance from when Bonnie and Kevin made their entrance into the reception.First dance as man and wife…And of course, the cake! Congrats Bonnie and Kevin! Thanks for letting me share your special day.

What to Wear for Fall Portraits

I’m always asked for advice on what families should wear for portraits, so here are some fun ideas to point you in the right direction. I usually say that you should all dress like you’re going to the same place (like picking a theme….you’re all outdoorsy, or dressed up for a nice dinner, casual for lying around the house, etc), but don’t get all matchy-matchy. Avoid big logos, graphics, or loud patterns. One pattern is okay, like someone in plaid or stripes….but keep that very limited. Again, not too matchy-matchy, but find colors that compliment each other like in the color palettes below:

Liz & Colin’s Wedding | Baltimore Photography

Liz and Colin were married a couple weeks ago at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Mount Washington, followed by an amazing reception in Liz’s parents’ backyard in Lutherville. Liz is one of those people who you like instantly and feels like a friend within minutes. She and her family did most of the cooking and decor themselves, yet she was still a picture of calm before the ceremony.

Check out the amazing flowers below from the family garden! Liz looked super-adorable with her curls and lacey dress…The Church was gorgeous…I love, love these kiss photos! This is so Colin. He seems like a pretty serious guy at first, but then these bursts of humor come sneaking out.We were expecting rain and more rain that day, but to everyone’s relief, it held off until late in the evening. I was so excited to get some photos outside of this cute new husband and wife.Thanks to the amazing Kirsten Zarek for being my second shooter. Here’s one of her shots from the brief, yet hilarious, toast by one of Colin’s sisters. That’s the John O’Dell Band in the background…they were playing some amazing bluegrass!First dance….awww. The lighting looked amazing!One of my fave dancing shots from Kirsten:I got many shots of Liz looking like this….just blissfully happy!Here is Colin and his mom on the left and the cake cutting on the right. Liz’s mom made the cake if you can believe it!
